2018 Spring Equinox Rituals

3/20/2018

Wishing you all a joyous Spring Equinox today my loves!!

Today the day and night are of equal length, and signs of spring are beginning to boldly peek their way out of the cold soil here in Colorado. New life is begging to emerge after the long dark months of winter.

Yesterday I went on a long walk near my house. I was listening, as one does, to the audiobook of the Mists of Avalon, but about 10 minutes into my walk, the audio abruptly stopped and I couldn’t for the life of me get it to restart. So instead, I continued my walk au natural, paying attention to the sounds, smells, and sights of the little corridor of nature surrounding me. I was struck by the most wondrous of things. A scattering of long, graceful feathers led me to the remains of a bird recently eaten by a coyote or fox. I placed two feathers in the bark of a nearby tree to honor this event. The cows were itching themselves cathartically on the low hanging branches of cottonwoods along the creek, carving divots in the muddy banks in their attempts to reach further, more satisfying branches. The creek, oh the creek itself - as it flowed over rocks and branches, the water created such beautiful ripples and patterns that caught the sun at just the right angles to stun me with its beauty.

And then, struggling valiantly through the shallow, cow trodden waters, a little sweet fish! I didn’t even know that fish could survive in this small creek that sometimes freezes through almost entirely! It was so dear, and having the opportunity to observe its skillful efforts to navigate the stream felt like a miraculous gift. Spring is coming and I could dance with the joy of it!
The first practice that I bring to you, inspired by this experience, is simple, but very powerful:

Go outside. Leave cell phone and all distractions behind. Attune yourself to your senses. Notice which sounds meet your ears. Notice the smells that come and go. How does the air feel on your skin, or the grass, or the bark of a tree? Observe deeply. Even if you are in the middle of a city, there is bound to be some sort of ecosystem present - so take some time and get to know the local happenings! Who is present? Who has been there? What is happening now? What grand story that we usually don’t even notice is playing out right here in your neighborhood? Watch for signs of spring, for pricks of color, for activity, and for tiny glorious miracles.

The second practice ritualizes our theme of new beginnings:

Spring time is the time of bursting into life after a long winter of inward journeying. For this you will need a journal, a candle, and some paper and art supplies if you want to get fancy with it.

Start by pondering these questions and writing about them in your journal:

What new wisdom and insight has this winter brought to you?

What new dynamics/ideas/projects/intentions/etc would you like to bring to life this year? Dream big, you’re just writing these things down, the inner critic (the voice telling you why these things can’t or shouldn’t happen) can step aside for a minute and allow you to take a look at these desires.

Now, light your candle to symbolize that you are entering into a moment of sacred space. In this moment, you get to be in contact with the most confident, self-loving, and empowered parts of you - your Big self, your deepest and most wise self. You may also invoke at this time any spiritual guides/helpers/deities whom you wish to witness and support your springtime blossoming.

With your paper and art supplies (this can be super simple, or as artistic as you like!), create small but potent depictions of what you are wanting to bring to life. I like to stick to 3-4 so as to not get overwhelmed, but you can make as many as you like.

Once you have created these, place them in a special place - an altar for example - where you will see them regularly. Make a gesture to honor these new intentions - a bow, or a small offering works just fine - and then extinguish your candle.

Afterwards, think of three small but practical actions you can take towards these intentions, and put them into your calendar!

I would love to hear in the comments below what you have noticed from these practices, or any other ways you are celebrating this beautiful day!
